The XTERRA Arizona Xtreme Desert Triathlon returns to Saguaro Lake for its 8th year! The scenery on this course is breathtaking. Held in and around Saguaro Lake, nestled in the Tonto National Forest. Come out and test yourself against a tough course that is a showcase of the best Arizona has to offer. The post race celebration at Saguaro Lake Ranch is well worth staying for. Hang out and compare notes with other athletes while you enjoy pizza, beer and much more. The 8th annual XTERRA: Arizona Xtreme Desert Triathlon will be held in conjunction with The Saguaro Lake Road Triathlon.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

TRANSITION AREAS

There are two transition areas for this event.

Transition 1 (T1)

Butcher Jones Cove.

Rack your bike and leave your T1 athlete bag (bike gear) at Butcher Jones Cove between 4:00 p.m. Friday and 8:00 a.m. Saturday. Bikes can be racked in the transition area on a first come first served basis. If you need access to your bike on race morning you may do so.

Transition 2 (T2)

Saguaro Lake Ranch Resort. Leave your T2 bag with your run gear in it with DCB before getting on the shuttle and it will be transported and arranged numerically in the run shute at T2.

SWIM

In the calm waters of Saguaro Lake, this point to point swim travels from Key Hole Recreation area to Butcher Jones Cove along the majestic cliff walls on the north side of the lake.Water temperature is expected to be in the mid 60s. Wetsuits, while not mandatory, are encouraged.

BIKE

Immediately out of the transition area at Butcher Jones Cove, athletes will head up a 1000 foot climb to the mesa overlooking the Saguaro Lake. The course will continue to gently climb out of the lake area into the Rolls (named this for a good reason). Once you turn west on this course it's smooth sailing all the way to the transition at Saguaro Lake Ranch Resort. There will be a mountain bike course pre-ride with race director, David Benjes on April 19 at 7:00 a.m. from Butcher Jones Cove.

RUN

This 5.5 mile trail run is as beautifully scenic as it is tough. The run begins and ends at Saguaro Lake Ranch Resort. There will be a run course preview with race director, David Benjes on April 19 at 9:00 a.m. from Saguaro Lake Ranch.

ATHLETE BAGS

Every athlete will be supplied with a three gear bags.

1. T1 Bag (Swim to Bike)

Containing your cycling gear and you need to drop off with your bike at Butcher Jones Cove.

2. T2 Bag (Bike to Run)

Contains your running gear and is to be left with staff before getting on the shuttle at Water Users parking lot race morning.

3. DRY CLOTHES

Contains anything you wear on the shuttle that you do not wish to swim with and is to be left with staff at the start area.

AID STATIONS

There will be four aid stations on the run course stocked with water, Gatorade and GU.

Thursday April 24

5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Packet Pick Up and Late Registration at Tribe Multisport

Friday April 25

5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Packet Pick Up and Late Registration at Saguaro Lake Ranch Resort. Bikes should be dropped at T1 between 4:00 p.m. Friday and 8:00 a.m. Saturday.

Saturday April 26

7:00 a.m. Shuttles begin running from Water Users parking lot to Keyhole

8:30 a.m. Last shuttle leaves Water Users parking lot to Keyhole

9:00 a.m. Saguaro Lake Road Triathlon begins

9:15 a.m. XTERRA Arizona Xtreme Desert Triathlon begins


DIRECTIONS

From Phoenix

Take I-10 east to the Loop 202 freeway east. Exit Country Club (Highway 87) and go northeast to Bush Highway. Second right, (two miles) is the entrance to Butcher Jones Cove. Turn left and the race site is two miles down that road.

From Scottsdale

Take the Loop 101 south to the Loop 202 freeway east. Exit Country Club (Highway 87) and go northeast to Bush Highway. Second right, (two miles) is the entrance to Butcher Jones Cove. Turn left and the race site is two miles down that road.


PARKING

All athletes must park at Water Users Parking approximately a ¼ mile south of Stewart Dam Rd. There is no race day parking at Butcher Jones Cove or Saguaro Lake Ranch Resort. Parking is $6 and athletes are responsible for purchasing and displaying their parking pass. There are several ways you can purchases Parking Passes:

AWARDS

Overall awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers. Age group awards will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers per the following age groups:

younger than 20

20-24

25-29

30-34

35-39

40-44

45-49

50-54

55-59

60-64

65-69

70+

Awards will also be given to the top three finishers in the following categories:

Clydesdales (Men 200 +lbs)

Athenas (Women 150+ lbs)

Challenged Athletes

Relays


RACE NUMBERS

Every athlete is required to wear his/her Road ID race number for the run portion of the race. Every athlete is required to have his/her self-adhesive bike number attached to his/her bike during the bike leg.


TIMING

This event will be timed using Race Director©. It is very important that athletes are both body marked and have their race numbers displayed.


ROAD SAFETY

Please remember that the roads are not completely closed to traffic. Cyclists do have the right of way at STOP signs and Deputy Sheriff's are in location to allow cyclists to continue without stopping. However, please remain alert and stay to the far right of the road unless passing.

REFUNDS

THERE ARE NO CASH REFUNDS! ENTRY FEE- EVENT CREDIT If you wish to withdraw from an event you may receive an event credit to a future DCB Extreme Adventures Event. You must notify us in writing (email- Shannon@dcbadventures.com or 891 E. Warner Road 100-138, Gilbert, AZ 85296) of your intent to withdraw and meet one of the following scenarios. 1) If for any reason, you notify DCB Extreme Adventures more than 30 days prior to the event date you will receive a 50% credit towards a future DCB Extreme Adventures Event.. This credit only covers the race entry fee. USAT one-day licenses, processing fees and online registration fees will not be included with your credit. OR 2) If you have a medical reason, you will need to provide a signed doctors letter advising us that you are not able to compete. DCB Extreme Adventures must receive this letter at least 14 days prior to the event date in order for you to receive your 50% race event credit. This credit only covers the race entry fee. USAT one-day licenses, processing fees and online registration fees will not be included in your credit. Extenuating Circumstances: If you have an injury or a member of your immediate family has a death or a medical emergency and it is within 14 days of the scheduled event and greater than 72 hours prior to the event, you will need to notify us in writing. The race director will consider each request on a case-by-case basis for future DCB Extreme Adventures event credit. No credits will be issued with less than 72 hours of race date Please be advised that USAT considers transferred event entry fraud. If you sell or give your race slot away, both you and the person using the race slot are subject to a 2-year suspension from racing at any USAT sanctioned race. PLEASE contact us if you intend on doing something like this and we will do it the right way.  

SANCTIONING: This event is sanctioned by USA Triathlon (USAT), the governing body of multisport in North America. One of the many roles played by USAT is that of insurance provider for this race. As such USAT requires that every participant be either (1) an annual member and provide proof of membership at packet pick up, or (2) purchase a one day membership for $10. Please visit http://www.usatriathlon.org for more information. USAT Licenses: Photo ID and Proof of USAT license are required for packet pickup. If you do not have an annual license or did not purchase a one-day license when you registered on-line, you must purchase a one-day license for $10 and sign a waiver when you pick up your packet. You may only pick up your own packet and must show valid photo ID. Parent signature for minors is a must!!!
