TOUR DE SCOTTSDALE

At 7:00 a.m. on Sunday October 5, 2008 participants in the fifth annual Tour de Scottsdale will begin an extraordinary cycling adventure that will circumnavigate the beautiful McDowell Mountains in North Scottsdale.  The race benefits The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, an organization committed to preserving the Sonoran desert and its mountains for the benefit of this and all future generations.
 
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Starting line once again is at the wonderful Market Street Bridge at DC Ranch. The course will wind through approximately 70 miles of rolling hills and spectacular desert views.  
Cyclists will follow lead vehicles for a controlled rolling start until they reach Thompson Peak Parkway

  • Thompson Peak Parkway back to Finish     
  • Finish along Thompson Peak Parkway at Desert Camp intersection

Bike Support
Bicycle Showcase will once again be on course bike support and sag will be roaming the course throughout the event. There will also be basic repair equipment at each aid station. However, to avoid possible lengthy waits for bike assistance, it is strongly recommended that each rider be self-sufficient.
 
Aid Stations
Aid stations will be located approximately every 10 miles along the course for rider support. Aid stations, although staffed by volunteers, are self service. Aide Station #1 is supported by the fantastic folks at Whitestone Reit!, Aide Station #2 , Aide Station #3, Aide Station #4, Aide Station #5. With FOOD donated and supported by the great folks at FRESH & EASY! If you need any food and/or drink you will need to stop, dismount your bike and help yourself. There will be medical support at each aid station.
 
Safety
The course will be secured by the City of Scottsdale Police, Maricopa County Sheriffs and traffic barricading. The course is not completely closed to traffic so please ride sensibly and safely. Follow all instructions from course marshals and officers. If you drop from the ride and decide to ride back to the venue, please follow all the rules of the road.

Refunds
There are no refunds or transfers for any reason. This includes weather, injury or the necessity to change distances or the course due to unforeseen and/or unanticipated circumstances.

The post party at Market Street will be a festive atmosphere where participants and guest alike will enjoy a beverage garden provided by Michelob Ultra and live band entrainment from EastonAshe. The Tour de Scottsdale is proudly presented by; Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar and Scottsdale Foothills Rotary.

TIMING
The Tour de Scottsdale is timed using a separate time/place software system. Our timing system relies on athletes leaving the finish chute in the same order they came across the finish line. The finish chute is 1/4 mile long, please stay in finish order until your number is collected. Timing volunteers will take the race number tab we have provided you with your registration packet.
 
DIRECTIONS
From Phoenix
Take I-17 north to the Loop 101 freeway. Take to Loop 101 east to the Pima Rd exit (Exit 36). Take Pima north to DC Ranch (SE corner or Pima and Thompson Peak).

From Scottsdale
Take Loop 101 freeway north to the Pima Rd exit (Exit 36). Take Pima north to DC Ranch (SE corner or Pima and Thompson Peak).

PARKING
There are three primary parking locations for athletes and spectators.
1. Safeway Supermarket (Pima & Thompson Peak)
    Safeway parking is only accessible from the two entrances off Pima. There is no access from Thompson Peak. Please follow to directions of the parking volunteers.
2. DC Ranch Community Center
3. Copper Ridge Middle School (Thompson Peak & Desert Camp)
 
ATHLETE STAGING
Athletes will be staged according to ability. Staging within each level is on a first come basis. REMEMBER: Cyclists will follow lead vehicles for a controlled rolling start until they reach Thompson Peak Parkway.

25 mph (Advanced cyclists)
Area 2
20 mph (Intermediate cyclists)
Area 3
15 mph (Beginner cyclists)
Area 4
Recreational cyclists
 
*Please note that a minimum of 10 mph must be maintained. All riders must pass each aid station in the allotted time to continue. If you do not maintain the minimum mph, a Tour de Sctsdale representative will inform you of the options.
Option 1
Continue along the course, obeying all traffic signs and laws.
Option 2
A support vehicle will be more than happy to transport you back to DC Ranch for the festivities.
 
FAMILY FUN RIDE
This tour of the DC Ranch community will follow the same start as the full ride, along 90th Place to Desert Camp, east to Thompson Peak Parkway and back to Market Street. Staging for the Family Fun Ride will be under the covered bridge.
 
TOUR EXPO
The post ride expo and celebration will be held from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m on Market Street at DC Ranch. Entertainment includes music, food, merchandise and fun for Tour riders, spectators and cycling enthusiasts of all ages.
 
AWARDS & RAFFLE
Awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers. Every athlete is automatically entered in the Tour de Scottsdale raffle. Additional raffle tickets will be available for purchase to athletes and spectators.
 
BANDITS
The Tour de Scottsdale is a Charity event, with proceeds benefiting the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy and the DC Ranch Community Foundation. We can't control bandits (participants who ride without paying) we only hope that the riders who have paid draw some negative attention to the bandits.
