Mountain Biking Frequently Asked Questions
We look to make each of our mountain biking events fun and competitive at the same time. Whether you're a first time racer, just want to get out for a good time or want to cheat death for a couple hours, our events cater to all types of riders.
The following are a few details about our races, racing categories and some of the most commonly asked questions for our mountain biking events.
Category Descriptions
Beginner (USA Cycling Category 3)
A CAT 3 rider is a newer or recreational racer with limited riding time. Racers in this category ride casually in their free time and are looking to enjoy the race without being tremendously competitive. Competitors that finish in the top 20% overall in this category should move up to the Intermediate (CAT2) level if desired. Courses are designed to be 8-12 miles in length dependent upon course conditions.
Intermediate (USA Cycling Category 2)
A CAT 2 rider is an experienced racer of average ability. Racers with 2 or more years of racing experience and training more than 4 hours per week should compete in this category. Courses are designed to be 12-24 miles in length dependent upon course conditions.
Expert (USA Cycling Category 1)
It is required that either an International Pro or USA Cycling Mountain Category 1 annual license is required to register and to compete in the Expert CAT 1 group. Only very experienced riders should enter this category. Courses are designed to be 25-32 miles in length dependent upon terrain & course conditions.
Kids
This event is for children 14 and under looking to have an enjoyable time on a non-competitive track. Races for this category will run at the end of the cross country events and will typically be chaperoned by the more experienced riders and parents. The courses are non-technical and designed to be fun for the kids. They are usually around 2-3 miles in length.
